I'm sitting at my dining table trying to complete assigned reading for
15 Spet 08 NUR 401 lecture. I'm not sure if I will be able to complete the readings but, I will do my best.
The topics of discussion: Sleep & Rest Pain Perception & Mgmt
As nursing students we need to understand the importance of sleep & rest as it pertains to health and illness.
Yet, I'm sure we all have experienced sleep deprivation as we make our way through the Touro nursing program. As I read the Fundamental Text
I have found an approved NANDA
Sleep Deprivation Definition: Sleep Deprivation is "prolonged periods of time without sleep" (2007)
Defining Characteristics:
Daytime drowsiness
Decreased ability to function
Inability to concentrate
I know I can identify can you?
Here are my couch side solutions. Try to get at least 6 hrs. min sleep
Diet / Nutrition is impt in gaining optimal sleep & rest
Have a solid Breakfast ie. oatmeal w/ cinnamon & banana, cereal, eggs or bagel w/ jam, fruit smoothie, orange juice, morning tea peppermint,
Lunch: a PB &J or in my case almond butter & jam, aim to eat something green daily and a fruit like a apple, plum, pear etc.
consume H2O throughout the day it is recommended half your body weight in oz. min daily
Snack's: popcorn, nuts, crackers, licorice, dried blueberries, cranberries or various other fruits carrot sticks, yogurt covered pretzels, cheerios without the milk ;-) etc.
Dinner: pasta is always good with cheese, chicken, shrimp, and veggies etc.
The solutions I have described, I believe can give offer some energy throughout the day as you take on new information from the day's course work.
Once you are done with school work for the day, consider a 30 min walk on the treadmill if you have time. Go home read a little, prepare for nite nite then repeat the above solutions the next day :-)
Be Well,

Hi LaShare,
These are very good advices. I know what you mean... When I read the nursing fundamentals assignments (and all the other class), I tend to easily fall asleep. I am not really sure why, but I am going to try what you suggested. Thanks for the hints.
Sophie
I think you ladies hit this one on target. Reading that foundations book requires a lot of energy and concentration, but when you do not have enough sleep and proper nutritional intake than you will not be able to concentrate. I will take in your advice LaShare!
After today's lecutre on sleep and rest I have found that "insomnia" can be: an extended time to fall asleep, difficulty staying asleep & feeling tired after a night's sleep. I think I have experienced insomnia. I use to work nights in the ER for 2 years and switching from days to nights weekly caused my insomnia, which I learned today that "shift work" is a factor that affects sleep. I know going into the field of nursing working nights is a reality because nursing in the hospital setting is a 24 hour 7 days a week job. Also in my readings on "sleep and rest" I learned that many people that suffer from insomnia and don't report it to their health care personnel. People who suffer from insomnia self medicate themselves using hypnotics also known as sleeping pills and alcohol to promote sleep, but what I didn't know is that these distrub sleep. Working nights is a cycle of sleeping aids and caffeine.
