Ostomy Care
How cool was that? Today in lab we had a guest instructor, a Wound, Ostomy & Foot Care Nurse. It was such a positive experience. It was hands on and very informative. Not only did the guest instructor teach the class the skills to care for an ostomy but she used her experiences to explain to the class that different clients will feel differently about their ostomy and depending on their situation it will effect how a client will care for their ostomy. I am excited to perform this new skill.

Today was a Good Day :-)
I was pleased with Joana Nightingale RN and General Manager of Affinity Hospice of Life, Joana provided real life situations when maintaining the quality of care needs for terminally ill clients.
I am actually considering volunteering my time with the Affinity Center Team.
Armi Earlam, RN, BSN Certified in Wound, Ostomy & Foot Care Wow !!! she is a Dynamo. Awesome in her delivery of information. Armi provided a lot of information in a short period of time and incld. class particpation.
She made the discussion of Ostomy Care interesting.
I have a better understanding of fitting pouches for 3 types of Ostomy's Colostomy,Illeostomy,
and Urostomy I am familiar with Manufacture pouches ie. Hollister not related to the clothing manf., Convatec and Colonplast Armi demo a crutting techique using
(ostomy powder w/ prep protective skin barrier) as well.
Overall both guest speakers were very passionate about their roles in health care
I look forward to seeing more speciality nurses as guest lectures during my BSN experience
I agree!! I think having the guest speaker teaching us how to do ostomy care and use the pouches was awesome! She was interactive, hands on, and a change from the norm. I feel like she was really into the topic and this made me very interested in the topic. It is always fun to learn through someone who is so passionate about their job. It was a great lab!! I dont think I will be doing ostomy care later on in my career, but it was still very interesting to learn.
I agree. Having guest speakers instructing us about what they specialize in is a good way for us to learn and have hands on experience. It was interesting to meet with different nurses (hospice and ostomy). Every day we learn about the different types of nurses they have in the medical field.
What we learned today was very helpful. I realized that patient respond differently to treatment. Armi Earlam emphasized a point during her teaching: have the patient try different ostomy pouches to see which one fits better in terms of comfort, finance, size and even design...
Yes I could not agree more. Armi is an experienced wound nurse and her experiences made the class more stimulating. I didn't realize how difficult it is to fit the stoma. It looked so easy, but it did fool me. Since I started clinicals, I have only heard of ostoomy care, but seeing it in the clinical skills lab made more sense to me. We should have more guest speakers!
I totally agree. Whenever we can get an opportunity to get hands on training, I believe we should take advantage of it. I Believe that it will only benefit us.
It's always helpful whenever we can get a guest speaker who can show us an example of anything hospital-related and who can offer us a hands on opportunity.
Thanks for sharing all this with us.Helping others is always good. The most distinct thing of any human that distinguishes him from animal is mercy and helpfulness. I just wanna appreciate your work. The people who are having Ostomy may use the Ostomy Lingerie so as to live their life normally. We will work for the fulfillment of needs of Ostomates in the up-coming years.
